Fresh From the Garden

I tried some tennis today - just 8 games - as I was at the courts anyway to run the Friday morning social. My fingers were well taped up and I wore an old golfing glove on my left hand. After playing the fingers were a bit tender but no blisters, thankfully. Next time I will try to play longer. Maybe the skin will toghen up.

There's still three weeks to go before I can take off the splint and I am employing all my coping mechanisms to get through the days. One big disadvantage is that I can't do any baking that requires kneading, so no shortbread cookies! Today I managed to make a rhubarb cake, which just required stirring with a wooden spoon, with the first picking of my rhubarb plants. It looks yummy!

  1. It is challenging to be unable to use your dominant hand and arm! I was unable to use my right arm for 3 months and then limited use for another 6 months. Couldn't even pick up a fork to eat or a glass of water to drink. Fortunately I'm pretty good with left hand and I bet you are doing pretty well with your right hand by now even if you weren't before! Hang in there! Your pie looks terrific.

    1. The cake turned out OK but not my best effort. That must have been tough with your injury. I'm getting used to using my right hand more.

  3. Yep, any injury to a hand or wrist causes challenges. Hopefully you will be fully healed very soon.

    God bless.

  4. Woohoo for the game of tennis. I have never heard of rhubarb cake - pie, yes. Maybe you could try a melt and mix recipe.

  5. Not exactly in the same league but I'd been struggling to get jobs done in the kitchen yesterday after cutting my finger on the edge of some aluminium foil! I had, thankfully, just finished making my pastry.
The rhubarb cake looks like a delicious alternative to some cookies. X

  6. Yes, blood in the pastry, not good! And they do tend to bleed a lot.

  7. I would say that rhubarb cake is more than a satisfactory substitute for shortbread cookies. No wonder you need to be playing tennis consistently, to burn those carbs. Glad you had no ill consequences in your attempt to return to the courts.

  8. Glad you have found a way to get some tennis in. Oh your rhubarb cake looks delicious. I have a tried & true rhubarb citrus loaf, which freezes well & now I am reminded to get a 2nd harvest of rhubarb, maybe I'll try a cake this time :)
