Today the Tree Came Down

After waiting weeks for the permit, the time has come for the Norway Spruce in my back yard to be brought down. I forgot to take a "before" photo but here is the progress so far.

This is the long-awaited permit which has to be displayed prominently.

You can see Jay standing on one of the lower branches which he left as he worked up the tree.

Now he is approaching the summit. I had to leave at this point as it was beginning to look dangerous!

When I returned a couple of hours later the worst was over. They are still working on it (7:00 p.m.) and I think they will have to come back tomorrow to finish up. The mess is incredible, pine cones everywhere! I am so glad I waited until it was done to take the cover off the pool. Hopefully in the next day or two I will be able to post a photo of my reclaimed back yard.

  1. It's always sad to see a tree come down. But, perhaps it was time.

    1. It was really too big for the space and very messy!

    1. I will have to think how to fill the space.

  3. I don't know why certain varieties of trees are planted in domestic situations. They cause damage at the worst and a mess at the best. But once up they can't be taken down without a fight. There was a story on the news recently about a frangipani which had self sown in a small back yard and grew to cover several properties. If it drops a branch there will be damage but council say it is healthy so it must stay.

    1. Luckily my tree was deemed "in decline" so it could go.

  4. It is sad to see a tree down but sometimes it just has to be done. Hopefully the mess won't take too long to clear. xx

    1. It will take me a few days but nothing too serious. The fence survived!

  5. What a difference to your view now that huge tree is down... although no more nude sunbathing out there now!

    1. Hope the Psalm helps but I don't think it was me who suggested it.

  7. I find it amazing to watch the tree cutters at work, they seem so nimble, even more so than the squirrels. It will be interesting as you re-learn the sun patterns in the yard without that big tower of a tree.

    1. The guy who climbed the tree was amazing but I couldn't bear to watch as he got near the top!

    2. Chris, I'm not sure why Google has me as an Anonymous poster - sorry about that.

    1. Probably too bright as it did supply some much needed shade on hot days. Winter will be better.

  9. Oh boy, that was a big one! We have a big old Norway Spruce in our front yard. The cones that I rake every year are ridiculous! I imagine your pool maintenance will be less now with that gone. -Jenn

    1. I could tell it was dying as the cones and needles were in constant need of sweeping up. It will make it so much easier to keep the pool clean.

  10. My goodness, that was a big tree, will you have the stump removed? Trees can be so messy, we have a huge Copper Beech in our front lawn, it is beautiful. However, in the Spring when the leaves open the covering piles up on the ground so much we sweep them up. In the Autumn, the nuts, thousands of the picky little things fall. Winter brings the leaves down, they fall very late, do not compost. You need a fence of some kind as a backdrop for a small garden which will also hide the compost bin.
Look forward to see the transformation.
