Expenses

Expenses keep adding up. Yesterday my stove went dark (only way to describe it, nothing worked), but luckily, just as I finished cooking dinner. A guy is coming tomorrow to fix it (I hope!) but tonight it is leftovers heated in the microwave. The worst part is the initial visit is $120 just to evaluate the problem and give a quote. If I go ahead with the job that payment is deducted from the final bill. So, who knows what it will turn out to be.

However, I haven't heard back from the wet basement repair guys or the chap who is to fix my back fence, so no money laid out there yet. Maybe I can put them off until the Spring?

I have decided to get a new liner for my pool as it is looking rather shabby and I suspect I have a small leak. That will be done in the Spring but, wouldn't you know, they want half the cost paid up front. I will try and put them off until next month.

  1. Wow, my total oven cost was only $40.00 more than what you will need to pay for the initial visit. Hopefully you will only have to pay that much more.

    God bless.

    1. I did ask the guy if it would be better to replace the stove but he didn't think so.

  2. What's that old saying ... that when it rains, it pours. Hopefully an easy fix to the stove & not too costly.

    1. The new part is ordered but it probably won't come until next week. Luckily I am not cooking the Thanksgiving meal!

  3. That is a hefty call out fee and paying half the costs up front also not good as many firms can go bust before or during the work. My neighbour had a new kitchen fitted by a local company. They had to pay up front but halfway through the week when they came to fit it the firm went bust and the workers downtools as they were not being paid. They were left with no work top and an unfinished kitchen and couldn't get any money back to finish the job! We learnt from that and went with a reputable national company who only required a 10% deposit until all the work was completed.
These maintenance jobs start to stack up into a tidy little sum don't they when they go one after another. Good luck with the cooker and fingers crossed it is something minor.

    1. I had a similar situation last year with unexpected car repairs coming on top of a window installation.

  4. That is a lot of expense all at once. I can understand companies don’t want to send people out to give an opinion and then not get the work but call out charges are steep and off putting. What happened to the days when someone just came and fixed things.

    1. I think appliances are more costly to repair now but I am more bothered by the inconvenience of being without a working stove!

  5. Never ending, isn't it? Owning your own home is a heavy responsibility at times.

    1. It certainly is a constant drain but worth it in the long run. Rents are pretty high here at the moment.
