Cold and windy again today but I had my daily constitutional despite almost being blown off my feet. Phoned a couple of elderly friends to make sure they were still alive and kicking (they were) and continued with my book and puzzle.
Only two things to remark on today - a batch of cauliflower soup (some for tomorrow and the rest for the freezer) and a batch of sour dough starter. It is made with milk and yogurt which is allowed to fermet and then flour is added. Then after you use some, you add more flour and water ad infinitum. Hope it works out.
I was reminded of this with an entertaining Stuart McLean story on CBC and found I had a recipe, so it is currently fermenting in a warm place. Tomorrow I will add flour and refrigerate the mixture for a couple of days, then try it in a loaf. I have run out of yeast and there was none in the grocery store so this will be a useful substitute.
Good luck with the sourdough. I am reminded that when the Ingalls could get yeast, Ma got the sourdough started again although I can't remember which book it was in. I've never had any luck with sourdough but everyone else I know thinks it is great so I reckon it is just my bad cooking!

DeleteOh how I miss Stuart McLean's Vinyl Cafe. I wonder what Dave & Morely would have made of the self isolation situation? Fingers crossed that your sourdough starter ferments well. Yeast is the new toilet paper of this pandemic!
ReplyDeleteYes, I miss him too. You can probably find him on You tube. So far, so good with the sourdough starter. It will be ready on Monday - I will post the results.
DeleteI seem to be spending hours on the phone now checking on everyone - but as long as they are alright I don't mind. I have only one bag of flour now to last me and one bag of bread flour so no time for any mistakes as our shops are completely sold out of flour!!
ReplyDeleteI managed to get flour last week and it will last me a couple of months, so no problem there. Judy brought over some yeast today with my Easter package which we exchanged on the front porch (keeping the appropriate distance apart, of course!).
