Food and a Book (2)

Saturday is grocery shopping day but I usually go after breakfast. Yesterday I changed things up a bit and went first thing, The store was considerably quieter but there were only two cashiers so I didn't save any time. Also, shopping on an empty stomach is not advised - I came home with a batch of chicken wings, something I rarely buy, but they were delicious grilled in BBQ sauce.

The rest of the day (the weekend, in fact) has been spent reading "Bring Up the Bodies" by Hilary Mantel. It is the second in a trilogy set in the 16th century and told through the eyes of Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII's master Secretary. I read the first book, "Wolf Hall", some time ago, and am now waiting for the final one, "The Mirror and the Light" which should hit the shelves soon.

This evening I am binge-watching "Howard's End" on PBS. It is a Masterpiece production full of magnificent views of the English countryside and fabulous costumes. There's another book I should request from the library.

The BBQ wings ready to eat.

    1. Yes, they were 30% off and there will probably be more reduced price packs this week.

  2. I like to go shopping before the rush starts. It's so much easier to get round and there's no holdups at the more mopular parst of the shop.
    Those wings look really delicious!

  3. Hilary Mantel is a superb writer and the history is always so well researched too. I’m waiting for her next book. Did you see the adaptation starring Mark Rylance on tv? It was superb.
If I don’t menu plan Iget back from the supermarket with a lot of shopping but not enough for a meal so it is disastrous!

  4. If we get to the supermarket too early we find they haven't yet finished stocking the shelves. Our produce comes across from the UK on the early ferry so we find it best to wait until they have unloaded and restocked. Unfortunately everyone else has turned up by then!

  5. Grocery shopping while hungry is not advisable, although it can lead to trying lots of new things. (Don't ask me how I know.) I saw Howard's End again on PBS, and can't remember where I had seen it before. Loved it both times.
