Strawberry Fields Forever

Our local strawberry picking farm had a drop in time for Seniors this morning so I was on the road just before 7:00 a.m. There was a surprising number of people there ahead of me but I got a good row and was finished picking by 8:00. It's about half an hour out in the country.

Home for breakfast and a relaxing swim then got stuck into jam making. I got one load done but decided to call it a day as I had a spill and the stove is a right mess! I have never had the jam overflow before but I managed to get most of it in jars. I will do another batch tomorrow.

I had a surprise visitor while swimming this morning. There was a splash behind me as I was climbing out of the pool and there was a tiny red squirrel swimming like mad toward me. I gave him a helping hand to get out and he scurried away under the bushes. I don't know which of us was more surprised - I've no idea how he fell in.

  1. Homemade jam is the best so I am glad you managed to get those baskets of strawberries to make some. Too bad about the overflow though.

The squirrel was sure lucky you were there to give him/her a helping hand.

    God bless.

    1. I've had lots of drowned animals in the pool - lots of mice, a bird or two and, once, a possum (that was nasty as I had to remove it myself and leave it by the curb for animal services to come for it) but that's the first squirrel.

  2. Had a bit on national news about the heatwave in Canada yesterday. Images of lots of people trying to cool off ;kiddies mostly in fountains. I'd dip in a fountain too gladly when the heat waves hits here which will be anytime soon. Red squirrel will have lots to tell his mates... "I fell in a big puddle of water and a human helped me out" "My saviour!" :-) Nothing better than homemade jam... go lovely on a toasted teacake! I am not sure if you get teacakes there but I am sure there is the equivalent or perhaps a brioche. keep well Amanda x

  3. Oh my that lucky red squirrel. I wonder if he/she were dipping down for a drink & went too far & fell in. Oh those strawberries look delicious as does your jam. Good luck with the stove clean up, jam can be SO sticky.

  4. What fun swimming with a squirrel. The jam looks delicious, that was brave doing it in that heat. I now have the beatles song in my head...

  5. What a surprise, a squirrel in the pool with you. At least you know you saved a life today!! and I just gotta ask... you picked strawberries, bending over to the ground for a whole hour or so. Honey, I would have keeled over and somebody would have had to scoop me right up and haul me away. a tad of balance issues at my age (87) but I do love strawberries.

    1. Luckily they were big ones so it didn't take me long to fill the two baskets. I always kneel down and just push myself along the row.
