Gadgets

I'm sure everyone has a cupboard full of useless gadgets bought or acquired in a fit of weakness. I have two slow cookers, one bought when the family still lived at home, and now too big for one person meals, and another smaller one perfect for cooking just for myself. I keep the bigger one for just one reason - I use it to heat up a big batch of apple cider to serve with Christmas lunch for the grandkids. Of course, I didn't need it this year as that event didn't happen.

Here are two of my most useless gadgets:

Have you guessed what this is? It is, in fact, an avocado slicer and pit remover. I have to confess to buying this myself (It seemed a good idea at the time). I also bought one for daughter and DIL but I'm sure neither of them has used it either. The pit remover is useless - easier just to whack the pit with a knife and remove it that way. The slicer is much messier than using a knife so it has sat in a drawer and will remain there until it is recycled to an unsuspecting buyer in a charity shop.

This gadget is supposed to slice, dice, spiral and chop vegetables and fruit. I have yet to get it to work on anything, although daughter says it is useful on zucchini. I don't like zucchini! It was a gift from her as she never uses it - 'nuff said!

Still very cold here so I have not "cast a clout" and won't until at least the end of the month. The wind was bitter on my walk to the mall and I was so glad to get home again. Not even any sun to warm my face!

  1. I do like a good knife and think you cannot beat it. I am not a gadget person at all - a cheese grater is about as far as I go though I do have a food processor which I use a lot.

  2. I bought a "spiralizer," too, and it didn't work. It was a gift for my daughter-in-law. I hope it is gone from her house! I was eyeing one of those small crock pots. They had one in chartreuse and it was very hard to resist! Hope your weather warms up soon!

  3. You're like me! I am a sucked for gadgets and, to be fair, have found some very useful little gizmos in my time. Not as many as the useless ones though!

    1. I thought of one more I bought and didn't use - a garlic slicer, too fiddly!

  5. I bought one of those multi-slicing things (kind of like a mandoline) and I used it once. It now is stored away and when I start to purge unwanted things, it will take a trip to Value Village. The most used thing in my kitchen is a little knife (of which I have multiple identical ones). -Jenn

    1. Yes, I have a favourite knife too. Value Village should be opening up this week when we go into a different category of lockdown. I have missed my weekly trip there!

  6. I made the mistake of mentioning once that a spiralizer would be kind of interesting to have (not that I really wanted one) and the next thing I know is that our oldest son had bought me one for Christmas. It is sitting in my cupboard unused.

    God bless.

I did however learn my lesson and now no longer mention anything that looks interesting.😊

  7. You are so right! Gadget friendly that's me! Trouble is I am always looking for gadgets that will make my life easier which has resulted in having a cupboard full of those useless gadgets that you mention. Take the simple garlic press for example half the garlic clove gets stuck to the bottom of the press and you have to scrape it out with a knife...so I turned back to the pestle and mortar! I have recently got rid of all my useless gadgets! I don't think I am cured but I do have an empty cupboard now :-) keep well Amanda x
