What with all my other concerns I almost forgot to get out to the Berry farm before they were all gone. It has been extremely hot for the last few days (high 30's with the humidex in the 40's) so I went extra early - the sun was barely up! Seniors are allowed to pick between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. without having to reserve a spot so that suited me very well.
I just picked one basketful and was home before 8:30. I made a batch of Strawberry Rhubarb jam this afternoon and tomorrow I will make a batch of just strawberry jam. I got 8 jars today and hope to get the same tomorrow so that will last me through the winter, plus I still have some of the 2024 batch to eat first.
I still have lots of rhubarb left so must think about picking it for a pie, cake or the freezer. By the end of the rhubarb season it's getting a bit tough so I use it to make rhubarb and mango chutney, another favourite treat of mine. All these things are also useful as hostess gifts or to share with family and friends.
It was my granddaughters High School graduation today but I didn't attend as it was just parents - it's a big school. However, we had a small celebration yesterday at home and, yes, cake was involved!
I need to get out and pick more rhubarb as well. Strawberries are just starting here.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
All done and dusted but I wish I had kept some to just snack on. They were very sweet and delicious!
DeleteThe heat has been very uncomfortable. Lots of strawberries and rhubarb have been consumed at my house this year.
ReplyDeleteNow I am just waiting for my crop of tomatoes to be ready to pick!
DeleteChris, doing some catch up reading & I'm sorry to hear that you have had some serious health challenges of late. Berry picking & eating along with jam making sounds a perfect way to spend some summer time. Hopefully you'll be able to enjoy the pool over the holiday weekend. Happy Canada Day!
ReplyDeleteThanks, I'm managing to get around (went to the Canada Day BBQ at the tennis club today but didn't play). No word on when I can get in the pool, though!
DeleteThanks for your comment. I hope you are feeling a lot better and getting back into all the things you like to do.
ReplyDeleteYour jam sounds delicious. This is the second time today that I've read about strawberries and rhubarb together. I really need to try it. Xx
